Emily awoke suddenly and completely. Her heart was racing, her senses on high alert. What had just woken her? She looked around her silent loft bedroom, straining her ears, but there was nothing. But there had been something, hadn’t there? Some noise that didn’t belong, some noise that would explain her current heart rate. Maybe she’d just had a bad dream? If so, that would be unusual. She tried to be stealthy as she sat up and slid her bare feet to the cool wooden floor. It was almost too quiet. She stood and, cringing at the deafening creaks from the bedsprings and the floor, tiptoed over to her spiral staircase and peeked downstairs.

Nick Carraway sat at the bottom looking up at her. She smiled, let out a puff of air she didn’t know she’d been holding, and decided that whatever the noise had been, if there even had been a noise, it was nothing to worry about.

She padded downstairs, stooped to swoop Nick up into her arms, and smothered him in kisses on her way to the coffee pot.

Still, as she stood looking out her kitchen window waiting for her morning elixir to drip, then as she sipped it while trying to focus on her morning devotion, and as she took a long shower, and as she got dressed, she couldn’t shake this unease that something was terribly wrong. As she put on her mascara, she prayed, “Whatever is wrong with me, make it stop. Please fill me with your peace,” but precious little peace arrived.

It was a long, mostly fruitless day, and when she saw James at 4:30, an unexpected wave of relief flowed over her. She didn’t realize she’d been worried about him until he was in her arms.

But something was wrong with him too. He was stiff and pulled away from her early.

“You OK?”

“Yeah, of course.” He looked at the floor.

“How was your day?”

“My day is always the same. Water, traps, bugs.” He took a drink from his water bottle, still not looking at her.

“OK, well, you’re just acting kind of upset.”

He turned to the fridge to get more water. “I’m fine, Emily. Just tired. Lucas took the day off today.”

“A day off? A sternman can do that?”

James shrugged. “Sternmen can do whatever they want. They often get fired, but ...” His voice trailed off.

“Are you going to fire Lucas?” Emily actually felt hopeful, but then felt guilty about it.

“Not for just one day off. He’s one of the best I’ve had. Great worker. When he’s there.”

She found this hard to believe, but she dropped it. She was just so relieved that James was there in front of her in one piece. She didn’t really believe in premonitions, but she’d had such a weird day.

“I’ve got to shower and change, get ready for the game.”

She watched him walk away, knowing for certain that something was really wrong, but not knowing what, if anything, she should do about it. Then she tried to get comfortable on the couch, and she waited.
